Two-post vs four-post car lifts
Most people arrive certain they want one of these and leave having chosen the other. The decision is not really about the lift, it is about what you are going to do with the car once it is in the air.
The one-line version
Two-post holds the vehicle by its frame, so the wheels hang free and the whole underside is open. Four-post is a drive-on runway, so the wheels stay loaded and the middle of the car is easy to reach but the wheels are not.
Everything else follows from that.
What settles it
Are you doing brake, suspension or wheel work? Two-post. On a four-post the wheels are sitting on the runway and you cannot take them off without adding a bridge jack, which is an extra purchase and an extra thing to store.
Are you mainly parking a second car? Four-post. It is what the configuration exists for, it does not need anchoring in most cases, and rolling a car on and off is a thirty-second job.
Do you rent, or would you rather not drill? Four-post. A two-post is bolted into your slab and that is not a reversible decision.
Is the slab an unknown quantity? Four-post, or find out. A two-post concentrates the whole load into anchors; a four-post spreads it across four feet and in most configurations is free-standing.
Is your ceiling under 10ft? Read the ceiling height guide before going further, because it may rule out the two-post regardless of what you would prefer.
What each one costs you
Two-post:
- Needs anchoring, so you need to know your concrete
- Needs the most ceiling height of any configuration
- Columns take up bay width and you work around them
- You have to set the arms under the correct lift points, and getting that wrong on a unibody car is how vehicles get damaged
- Nothing else gives you the same access for the same money
Four-post:
- Wheels stay loaded, so no brake or suspension work without a bridge jack
- The runways are under the car, so the centre of the underbody is partly obstructed
- It is physically larger and heavier to move if you ever change the layout
- Storing a car above a car needs the ceiling height to stack two vehicles, not one
What about scissor and portable?
They are not compromises so much as different answers.
A scissor lift has no columns, so doors open freely and the footprint is small. Mid-rise and low-rise versions are excellent for wheels, brakes and detailing and useless for standing underneath. Full-rise versions get you under the car, with the mechanism partly in the way.
A portable lift is the honest answer for a shared or rented bay, or a garage that has to be a garage again at the weekend. You trade capacity, lift height and rigidity for the ability to move it.
The pattern in what people actually buy
Home garages with one bay and a hobby project buy two-post. Home garages with a car collection buy four-post and stack. Working shops buy both and put them in different bays. Anyone who tells you one configuration is simply better than the other is selling you the one on their shelf.
